Who's Who at Remote Rivers Alaska

Jim Heafner, Trip Leader Jim Heafner -- Trip Leader moved to Alaska more than 30 years ago to pursue his passion for the outdoors. His yearly explorations have taken him through some of the wildest and most remote areas left in this great land. His reputation as a very safety conscious yet enthusiastic guide, provides a reassuring element to any remote trip. His outdoor training and experiences include: graduating from OARS Whitewater Rafting Guide School, 25 years of Alaska river running, directing a wilderness education/therapy program for adolescents and young adults, rock climbing instructor, and 32 years of wilderness travel experience around the world. An avid fly fisherman, Jim can usually show you where the fish are.

Kay Heafner, Camp Chef Kay Heafner -- Camp Chef is known for her infectious smile, great cooking and love of the outdoors. Kay and Jim have been married for 34 years and have raised two sons in Alaska. Her resume includes 25 years of Alaska wilderness travel, owning and operating her own floral business, catering, and work teaching special education students. Kay's catering background and 30 years of experience with outdoor cooking have given her quite a reputation. Knowledge of Alaska's unique and varied wild flowers is also a specialty.

Steven Hogan, Senior Guide Steven Hogan -- Senior Guide is a graduate of OARS Whitewater Rafting Guide School and has safely guided hundreds of passengers down rivers both in his home state of North Carolina and in Alaska. He has a reputation as an experienced and capable rafting guide. His outdoor experiences also include working as a rock-climbing instructor. He is certified in Swift Water Rescue and Wilderness First Responder First Aid. Steven is known for his humor and desire to educate others to the many joys of remote wilderness travel. When off the river, Steven can usually be found kayaking or snowboarding.

Luke Heafner, Assistant Guide Luke Heafner -- Assistant Guide holds the distinction of being the youngest graduate of the OARS Whitewater Rafting Guide School. He has 8 years of Alaskan and Canadian boat handling experience. Alaskan born, Luke has grown up with a deep love of the rivers and mountains, participating in many family wilderness and rafting trips over the years. When not in a raft, he is usually found fly-fishing, snowboarding, or rock-climbing.
